2019 RN APRN License Renewal

The renewal window for registered nurse (“RN”) and advanced practice registered nurse (“APRN”) licenses issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing (“Board”) begins Monday, July 1, 2019, and ends on Thursday, October 31, 2019.  Renewal is completed online using the Ohio eLicense system.

Prepare for Renewal Now

  • Update your email address. Beginning in mid-June, the Board will send renewal notifications to your email address on record with the Board.  You will not receive a renewal notice by U.S. mail.  To update your email address, call the Ohio eLicense Service Center at (855) 405-5514.
  • Use an appropriate web browser. The Ohio eLicense website works best if you use Google Chrome as your web browser.  You can also use Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer (Version 11).
  • Expired or forgotten passwords. If you have not used the Ohio eLicense system in the past 12 months, your password has expired.  If your password has expired or you have forgotten your password, visit the Ohio eLicense system website and click the “Forgot Password?” link to reset your password.
  • Additional information may be required. The renewal application includes, but is not limited to, questions concerning criminal, licensure, mental health matters, and alcohol/drugs matters.  All information provided in the renewal application is required to be true and accurate.  Depending on the response given to certain questions in the renewal application, uploading an explanation and Certified copies of certain specific documents may also be required.  If you are required to provide any additional documentation as part of your renewal application, the documents must be uploaded through the online system.  No hard copies of documents will be accepted.

The Renewal Process

  • Renewal Fees. The renewal fee for RNs is $65.00 and the renewal fee for APRNs is $135.00.
  • Must pay by credit or debit. Renewal fees must be paid online at the time of renewal using either a Master Card, VISA, or Discover credit or debit card.
  • Continuing education (“CE”). You must complete your CE requirements by October 31, 2019 to maintain licensure.  You do not have to provide documentation of completed CE, but you do have to attest that you have complied with the CE requirements required by the Board.
  • Renew as soon as possible. Incomplete applications or failure to pay renewal fee will cause your application to be rejected by the Board.  Waiting until a deadline and realizing you do not have all of the information needed to complete the application may prevent you from renewing timely.
  • Late fees. If you do not complete your application and pay the appropriate renewal fee by September 15, 2019, you must pay a late fee.  For those licensees filing late, the total cost for RNs is $115.00 ($65.00 renewal fee plus $50.00 late fee) and the total cost for APRNs is $135.00 ($135.00 renewal fee plus $50.00 late fee).

If you do not file a complete renewal application and/or pay the required fee by October 31, 2019, your license will lapse.  A registered nurse or advanced practice registered nurse in Ohio whose license has lapsed is not authorized to work as a nurse until their nursing license is reinstated by the Board.  It is a disciplinable offense to engage in the practice of nursing on a lapsed nursing license.

In certain cases, the renewal application may be forwarded to the Board’s Compliance Unit for review and a Board investigator may contact the nurse to obtain additional information.  In other cases, a Consent Agreement may be offered to the nurse to resolve a disciplinable offense instead of preceding to an administrative hearing.

Disclosures to the Ohio Board of Nursing

There are certain matters which must be disclosed to the Ohio Board of Nursing (“Board”) by a nurse license applicant or a nurse who is renewing their license.
The Board’s nurse license application and renewal application includes, but is not limited to, questions concerning felonies, certain misdemeanors, incompetency, professional licensure actions or investigations, mental illness, and substance abuse.
If the reply to any of the questions in the nurse license or renewal application is “yes”, then a disclosure is required. The applicant or nurse in renewal must mark “yes” to any applicable question and provide the Board a written statement of the circumstances underlying the “yes” reply and, for Court matters, Certified copies of certain court documents.
The Board is authorized to take disciplinary action against an applicant or licensee for any of the matters in Ohio Revised Code Section 4723.28. The sanction, if any, the Nursing Board imposes will depend on the individual facts and circumstances of the disclosed matter. Whether the applicant or nurse has other convictions, the acts underlying the offense, how long ago the offense occurred, and whether restitution or probationary terms were completed are typically also evaluated by the Board.

 
Except for certain limited instances, self-reporting criminal convictions prior to renewal is not required. However, criminal convictions are reported by the Court to the Board and it is recommended that a nurse consult with legal counsel to determine if it is in the nurse’s interest to self-report a conviction prior to renewal.
It is recommended to consult with legal counsel familiar with Board matters to determine if disclosure of a particular matter is required in an initial or renewal application and, if so, what information is required or recommended to be provided to the Board.

Registered Nurses: Don’t Let Your License Lapse

Under RC 4723.24, if a nursing license is not timely renewed, the license lapses on the first day of November of the renewal year. Registered nurses must renew their licenses on odd-numbered years. Therefore, if you do not renew your RN license by October 31, 2017, it will lapse. Practicing nursing on a lapsed license is a disciplinable offense.

After you file your license renewal, it is recommended that you verify before October 31, 2017 that your license has been renewed by the Nursing Board. Verify your license renewal at: http://elicense.ohio.gov/.

RC 4723.03(A) provides that no person may practice as a registered nurse, represent themselves as being a registered nurse, or use the title “registered nurse”, the initials “R.N.”, or any other title implying that the person is a registered nurse, for a fee, salary, or other consideration without holding a current, valid license.

RC 4723.28(B)(2) provides that the Board of Nursing may discipline a nurse if they engage in the practice of nursing, having failed to renew a nursing license.

Ohio RNs – License Renewal Time!

On July 1, 2017, the renewal window opened for registered nurses in Ohio.  The sooner you renew, the better.

 Cost and Timing:

Prior to September 15, 2017, the fee to renew your RN license is $65.00.  An RN Renewal Application filed after September 15, 2017 will also include a $50.00 late fee.  The RN license renewal window closes October 31, 2017.  After October 31, 2017, your RN license is considered by the Ohio Board of Nursing (“Nursing Board”) to have lapsed and you are unauthorized to practice nursing in Ohio until reinstated.

Questions on the RN Renewal Application:

The RN Renewal Application includes, but is not limited to, questions concerning your employment, residency status, Social Security number, criminal matters, medical or mental health matters, and substance abuse matters.  You are required to answer all questions on the RN Renewal Application truthfully and accurately.  Additionally, there are certain instances where you are required to upload with your RN Renewal Application specific documents and a written statement explaining your response to a particular question(s) in the RN Renewal Application.

 Based on the response(s) in your RN Renewal Application, the Nursing Board may open an investigation.  If an investigation is opened, you may be contacted by a Nursing Board investigator by phone or email requesting additional information or documentation concerning your response(s).

Licensed Practical Nurses: Your Ohio Nursing License Renewal Period Ended October 31, 2016

October 31, 2016 was the deadline for a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to renew their Ohio LPN nursing license with the Ohio Board of Nursing.

If you are an LPN who did not renew your Ohio LPN nursing license by the October 31, 2016 deadline, your Ohio LPN nursing license is now lapsed. You may check the status of your license at the following link:

As long as your Ohio LPN nursing license is lapsed, you are not authorized to practice nursing in Ohio. The Ohio Board of Nursing can take a disciplinary action against a LPN for engaging in the practice of nursing in Ohio having failed to renew their Ohio LPN nursing license.

If your Ohio LPN nursing license has lapsed and you want to be authorized to work as an LPN in Ohio, you must submit an online application to reinstate your Ohio LPN nursing license, which will require Ohio Board of Nursing review.

Ohio LPNs experience difficulties renewing licenses with new online system

LPNs who are renewing their nursing licenses in Ohio this year are required by the Ohio Board of Nursing to renew online. The Ohio Board of Nursing will no longer accept paper renewal or initial licensure applications. All applications must be submitted online.

In order to start the renewal process, each nurse should have received a letter from the Nursing Board with their Log In ID. If a nurse moved since their last renewal and has not updated their address with the Nursing Board, the nurse may not have received their Log In ID. In Ohio, nurses are required to maintain a current address with the Nursing Board. Nurses can update their address at the Nursing Board’s website. The Nursing Board will not accept emails or a letter advising of a new address.

There are 58,000 licensed LPNs in Ohio. Ohio LPN licenses which have not been renewed timely lapse on November 1, 2016. If you have not timely renewed your Ohio LPN license, you MAY NOT WORK ON AN EXPIRED OR LAPSED LICENSE.

Do not wait until the last minute to attempt to renew your license. After September 15, you will be charged a late fee in connection with your renewal application.

OHIO LPNs – It is time to renew your license to practice nursing in Ohio!

According to the Ohio Board of Nursing’s website, starting on July 1, 2016, all Ohio LPNs will be able to renew their professional license online.

Often, nurses have questions about how to respond to certain questions on the Renewal Application and what information needs to be provided to the Nursing Board in the Renewal Application.

Nurses are required to provide the Nursing Board with truthful and accurate information on their Renewal Applications.  Failure to do so can lead to discipline by the Nursing Board.

Additional Information May Be Required  (from Ohio Board of Nursing website)
• If you are asked to provide court documents or other information that may be required as part of your application, please be prepared to upload the documents electronically through the online system.  This information is usually required of applicants who answer “yes” to one of the additional information questions on the renewal application.  
• No hardcopies of court documents or other information required as part of your application will be accepted. Waiting until a deadline and then realizing you do not have all the information and in the form needed to upload the documents electronically through the online system will prevent you from renewing. 
• Incomplete renewal applications will not be accepted by the system.  If all required documents are not provided electronically, the renewal application is incomplete.

Ohio RNs and APNs, time to renew your license!

If you are licensed as a Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Ohio it is time to renew your professional license.

As part of its electronic renewal system, the Ohio Nursing Board assigns each nurse a unique User ID and Password.  You can access this information through the Board’s website at:https://license.ohio.gov/lookup/password.asp

You can save money by renewing your license before July 1, 2015.  Registered nurses who renew before July 1, 2015, must pay Sixty Five Dollars ($65.00).  After July 1, 2015, the cost goes up to One Hundred Fifteen Dollars ($115.00).

Advanced practice nurses (APRN) must renew their RN license and each of their Certificates of Authority (COA).  Before July 1, 2015, the renewal fee is Eighty Five Dollars ($85.00) for each COA.  After July 1, 2015, the renewal fee goes up to One Hundred Thirty Five Dollars ($135.00) for each COA.

APRNs with prescriptive authority must renew their RN license, their COA, and their Certificate to Prescribe (CTP).  The renewal fee for the Certificate to Prescribe (CTP) is Fifty Dollars ($50.00) through August 31, 2015.

APRN’s must provide the name and address of their collaborating physician as part of the renewal process.

Maintaining an Active nursing license is your responsibility. Failure to renew your RN license, COA, and CTP (as applicable to you) by August 31, 2015 will result in your RN license, COA, and/or CTP to automatically lapse.  Practicing under a lapsed license, COA, and/or CTP is a disciplinable offense.
